Good to know

The Hannoveraner Verband is an alliance of breeders and associated with the German National Equestrian Federation (FN). It carries the original studbook of the Hanoverian breed. The breeders are organized in local horse breeders clubs. The individual horse breeders clubs in turn are organized in regional breeding clubs with the Hannoveraner Verband as umbrella organisation. There are the regional breeding clubs of Braunschweig, Hanover, Hessen/Southern Germany, Lüneburg, Osnabrück/Emsland, East Frisia/Oldenburg, Stade and International. The regional breeding clubs serve as center position between the Verband and the horse breeders clubs of their district. Most of the foreign breeders are organized in the Hanoverian subsidiaries of their home country.

For a few years now the Hanoverian a ssociation has for - mulated guidelines for planning and realizing strategic goals. These guidelines describe the course of a decision process and, at the same time, they serve as a foundation for a discussion on how to realize definite measures. The international and national expansion of the association was prepared in accordance with this method.

The best way to buy a Hanoverian is at the Verden auctions. Verden auctions are success stories: The first event was held in 1949 – back then as well as today with the aim to support the breeders in selling their horses. First, two Elite riding horse auctions were held per year, but the system constantly improved. Today, the auction year includes nine sales events: The Verden Auction in January, March, May, July and November Auction complement the sales offer for selected riding horses and is supplemented by a Foal and Broodmare Auction. Another riding horse auction is held in the Verband-owned Horse Centre in Alsfeld, the first time in 2009. Highlight of the breeding and sales happenings are the Stallion Licensing and Stallion Sales in October.

Breeding Guidelines

Stallions

Breeding highlight of the year is the Stallion Licensing and the Stallion Sales in October. Several hundred of two-year-old stallions show up during the selection in front of the Licensing Committee a couple of weeks before – and only the best qualify for the important Finale.

Highest demands are required for a positive licensing result such as quality of movement, conformation, free jumping and health status. Some certainly consider the selection to be too strict, but exactly these strict selection regulations turned the Hanoverian horse into what it is today: a horse breed with highest international reputation. And experts have long recognized this as they regularly secure the Hanoverian jewels for themselves. And this is why the Olympic competitor Desperados FRH and Codex One, the “Sire of the World” Scendix and the competitors at the Federal Championships, Bobcat, Stakko and Bodyguard have one thing in common: They were all discovered at the Stallion Sales.

Mares

The Hanoverian mares are the basis of success. The dam lines are highly efficient and well-bred. The information system “Hanoverian Dam Lines” was presented to the public for the first time in 2010, and it is a valuable tool for every breeder for his breeding plans. However, Hanover’s mares are not only theoretically impressive, but also in practice. One of the most important events is the Hanoverian mare show, the Herwart von der Decken-Show where the best three-year-olds of the Hanoverian breed compete in dressage and show jumping. The event is complemented by a halfbred division. Family competitions are celebrated every five years, the next time this year, in 2013. The “Hanoverian Mare of the Year” is the counterpart to the stallion award and expressively emphasizes their importance for breeding: Famm, Luna, April Sun, Cecile, Wanda and Sammy Joe have held the title until today, descending from top sires like the World Cup Champion Shutterfly, Olympic Champion Salinero or shooting star Embassy II.

History

The usual process is that breeders of common interests and breeding aims come together and form an association, start a stud-book and establish rules and regulations concerning registration. That is, however, not the way it happened in Hanover. There, it all started with the foundation of the State Stud at Celle in 1735. Since this time the State stud has kept careful records of pedigrees of their stallions and the mares bred to them, so when in 1888 the Royal Agricultural Society officially establihed the "Hanoverian Warmblood Stud-book" it had already an excellent basis on which could be build up.
